The International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” covers the route from Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia and the birthplace of the great leader and General, up to Thessaloniki, the modern Greek metropolis of Macedonia. The Marathon that has ALEXANDER THE GREAT, one of the most recognized faces of humanity, as its symbol, is more than a largescale, international sports event. It is also an immersion into the history of Greece, from the ancient Greek civilization until today.
The first International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” took place on the 16th of April 2006 and was the result of a vision shared by sports, social, and cultural bodies from every part of Greece. MEAS TRITON of Thessaloniki is licensed by the Int’l. Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and under the aegis of the Hellenic Athletics Federation, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, and with the collaboration of multiple bodies and institutional supporters, organizes the top event in North Greece, with sports, social, cultural, environmental, touristic and above all historical importance, an event that is an excellent ambassador of our town, Macedonia, our whole country, and the entire planet.
The International Marathon is a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and every year it is officially included in the official annual international calendar. It is the only Marathon in the world allowed to use the name of Alexander the Great.
